Bone Health: Keeping Everyone In Your Family Healthy

If you're a parent, you do your best to keep your child's bones strong and healthy. But sometimes, what you do for your child isn't enough to keep their bones healthy. About a year ago, my loved one fractured a bone in their forearm and needed X-rays to find and treat the fracture. However, the diagnostic tests revealed that my child's bones weren't as strong as they should be. The doctor referred us to an orthopedist, or bone specialist, for further testing. The orthopedist diagnosed my loved one with a calcium deficiency problem. In order to strengthen and protect my child's bones from future problems, they needed to eat more calcium-fortified foods and take supplements. My loved one's bones are much better now. If you need information or tips about your family's bone health, read my blog. Good luck and thanks for visiting.

What To Expect After Knee Replacement Surgery

While knee replacement surgery is considered a major procedure, you might be able to get back to normal life within only six weeks if you are careful and do the things the doctor recommends after you complete the procedure. If you are scheduled to have knee replacement surgery completed or are contemplating it, here are several things you should expect after it is done.

You Will Stay In The Hospital A Few Days

The first thing to understand is that knee surgery is an invasive surgical procedure, and doctors will use anesthesia to put you to sleep. Because of this, you should plan on staying in the hospital for a few days after having it completed. Most people are able to leave the hospital within two or three days, but there is a chance you may be able to leave after just one day. It depends on how you are doing after having it completed.

You might be surprised to learn that your doctor will want you to get up and walk the same day as your surgery. This tends to shock people, because most people think they need to let the wound heal first; however, it is actually better to get up and begin walking right away. You will not be allowed to walk a lot, but your doctor will want you to get up to use the bathroom and short trips like that.

Your doctor will determine when to release you from the hospital by evaluating several different things. The first thing the doctor will evaluate is how far you can bend your knee. Doctors like to see that a person can bend their knee to a certain extent before allowing them to go home. A second thing the doctor will evaluate is how well you can walk. You will most likely begin walking with a walker, but you might be able to walk without any type of aid when you leave the hospital.

Your Recovery Time Depends On Your Health

A second thing to understand is that most people fully recover from this procedure within three months or so, but there are times when it takes much longer than this. People who prepare properly for the procedure generally recover faster, while people who have health problems or that smoke will typically require a longer amount of time to recover completely.

In most cases, people who undergo knee replacement surgery are able to do most normal activities within six weeks. This includes walking, light cleaning, and getting around the house and work.

You Will Need Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is a service that helps people regain strength, movement, and mobility after an injury occurs, and it is commonly used after surgical procedures. After a doctor replaces your knee, it will take time for it to heal, and it will take time for you to get used to your new knee. If you want to speed up the recovery process and regain full usage from your new knee, you may want to attend physical therapy.

Physical therapy is extremely helpful for regaining movement and mobility, and it involves doing a variety of exercises and activities that strengthen the muscles in and around the knee. You may need to complete the exercises you learn at physical therapy multiple times a day on your own. If you do this, you will be able to get back to normal relatively quickly after the procedure.

If you suffer from major knee problems and have not yet scheduled your knee replacement surgery, talk to a doctor today to find out if this is what you need to solve the problems you are experiencing.
